一、内容简介

本书从生产、技术、制度和文化的角度对主导现代化和全球化发展的西方价值提出了全面质疑，认为像人口爆炸、资源枯竭、气候变化、环境破坏、精神失落等一切现代化后果的产生深刻地反映了现代性与人、与自然、与人身心的矛盾；造成这些矛盾的根源是西方价值中产生出来的人类中心主义、物质主义、个性主义和进步发展观；从西方价值和现代范式本身，从现代化生产方式和生活方式中无法找到真正的解决办法；我们必须重估一切现代价值，重估一切传统价值，技术发展不是最终出路，重建价值才是希望；满怀希望地指出，东方的复兴将给人类带来希望，但东方尤其是中国在能够发挥其价值的人类影响之前，不得不按照现代范式迎头赶上；东方价值将成为整个人类的拯救价值和新范式的基础，而建立一种广泛的东方价值联盟对东方和人类都具有深远意义。

本书从某种意义上可看作是与《中国不高兴》的呼应，但主要是从价值层面来分析东、西方以及中国的过去、现在和未来的发展走向，有助于我们从全球和整个人类的背景下来重新认识东方和西方，增强我们对东方文化和传统文化的自信。

长期生活在西方，曾游历欧美诸国，并在阿拉伯国家和印度作过深入旅行考查，专注东西方文化的比较研究和祖国发展，具有独特视野和感受。

《Modernization versus Human and Nature》

Introduction

The book is an overall challenge to Western values which dominate modernity and globalization in terms of production, technology, system and culture. It deems that all the aftermaths of modernization such as population explosion, resource depletion, climate change, environmental damage and loss of spirit reflect contradictions between modernity and human, between modernity and nature, as well as those between modernity and human’s morality. These conflicts are caused by anthropocentrism, materialism, individualism and the progressive view of development resulted from western values.

We cannot find a thorough way to solve these conflicts above through western values, modern paradigm or modern ways of production and life; we must reevaluate all the modern and traditional values. Reconstruction of values rather than technology development is the ultimate and hopeful solution to end the conflicts. The author points out with a great expectation that the rise of the entire East will bring hope to human beings. But the East especially China has to catch up in the modern paradigm before it can exert its greater influences on human being’s values. Eastern values will become the salvation values and the basis for a new paradigm. Further, the establishment of a broad alliance of eastern values will be of far-reaching significance to the East and human beings in general.

An echo, in a sense, to Unhappy China: The Great Time, Grand Vision, and Our challenges, the book focuses on the analyses of the past, present and future trends of West and China from the perspective of values. It can help us to reread the East and the West against the background of the whole world and human beings; meanwhile, it will further strengthen our confidence in Eastern culture and traditions.

Living in the western countries for long, the author has extensively traveled around Europe and America. He has made substantive trips in India and Arabian countries and done in-depth research about these places. Dedicated to comparative studies of western and eastern cultures, as well as the development of his motherland, he has a unique cultural perspective and experience.
