http://www.pewglobal.org/2003/06/20/broad-opposition-to-genetically-modified-foods/
:A survey by the Pew Global Attitudes Project, conducted in 2002 and released earlier this month, shows that Western Europeans and Japanese are overwhelmingly opposed to scientifically altered fruits and vegetables because of health and environmental concerns. Although opposition in the U.S. is less widespread, 55% of Americans also believe genetically modified foods are a bad thing.
Nearly nine-in-ten in France (89%) say it is bad to scientifically alter fruits and vegetables “because it could hurt human health and the environment.” Just 10% think genetically modified foods are good because they increase crop yields and help the environment. More than seven-in-ten in Germany (81%), Japan (76%) and Italy (74%) also take a negative view of scientifically altered produce.

:Although the introduction of GM crops has provoked much less public controversy in the United States than in Europe, U.S. public support for this application of biotechnology is limited.
According to a 2008 CBS/New York Times poll, 44% of Americans indicate they have heard nothing or “not much” about GM ingredients added to foods to make them taste better and last longer (CBS-NYT 2008). However, 87% believe that these foods should be labeled and 53% expect that it is “not very likely” or “not at all likely” that they would buy food that is labeled as such.
ABC Poll: Skepticism of Genetically Modified Foods。June 19, By Gary Langer。
http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/story?id=97567&page=1
:With safety concerns widespread, Americans almost unanimously favor mandatory labels on genetically modified foods. And most say they'd use those labels to avoid the food.
Barely more than a third of the public believes that genetically modified foods are safe to eat. Instead 52 percent believe such foods are unsafe, and an additional 13 percent are unsure about them. That's broad doubt on the very basic issue of food safety.
Nearly everyone, moreover — 93% says the federal government should require labels on food saying whether it's been genetically modified, or "bio-engineered" (this poll used both phrases). Such near-unanimity in public opinion is rare.
57% also say they'd be less likely to buy foods labeled as genetically modified. That puts the food industry in a quandary: By meeting consumer demand for labeling, it would be steering business away from its genetically modified products.
