I am always amazed when I hear people saying that sport creats goodwill between the nations, and that if only the common peoples of the world could meet one another at football or cricket, they would have no inclination to meet on the battlefield.
I am always amazed when I hear people saying……,是一个时间状语从句,而saying之后则接以that引导的两个宾语从句:
……that sport creats goodwill between the nations;
……that if only the common peoples of the world could meet one another at football or cricket, they would have no inclination to meet on the battlefield.
……if only the common peoples of the world could meet one another at football or cricket, they would have no inclination to meet on the battlefield.

Even if one didn't know from concrete examples(the 1936 Olympic Games, for instance) that international sporting contests lead to orgies of hatred, one could deduce it from general priciples.
1、orgy: excessive amount(过量,过多)
*an orgy of parties/concerts/spending
2、deduce: arrive at (knowledge, a theory, etc) by reasoning; reach a conclusion(根据事实推理,推想,演绎出知识,学说等,获取结论)
*If you saw a doctor leaving a house, you might deduce the fact that someone in the house was ill.
Even if one didn't know from concrete examples(the 1936 Olympic Games, for instance) that international sporting contests lead to orgies of hatred……
……that international sporting contests lead to orgies of hatred

Nearly all the sports practised nowadays are competitive. You play to win, and the game has little meaning unless you do your unmost to win.
这是本文第二段前两句,比较简单,但要注意第二句中unless的运用,它可以分为if…not来理解,即……unless you do your unmost to win可改为……if you don't do your unmost to win

On the village green, where you pick up sides and no feeling of local partiotism is involved it is possible to play simply for the fun and exercise: but as soon as the question of prestige arises, as soon as you feel that you and some larger unit will be disgraced if you lose, the most savage combative instincts are aroused. Anyone who has played even in a school football match knows this.
On the village green, where you pick up sides and no feeling of local partiotism is involved
where you pick up sides and no feeling of local partiotism is involved
as soon as the question of prestige arises;
as soon as you feel that you and some larger unit will be disgraced if you lose,
……if you lose
……who has played even in a school football match

At the international level sport is frankly mimic warfare. But the significant thing is not the behaviour of the players but the attitude of the spectators; and, behind the spectators, of the nations who work themselves into furies over these absurd contests, and seriously believe--at any rate for short periods--that running, jumping and kicking a ball are tests of national virtue.
the significant thing is not the behaviour of the players but the attitude of the spectators……(the attitude)of the nations
who work themselves into furies over these absurd contests,
and seriously believe--at any rate for short periods--that running, jumping and kicking a ball are tests of national virtue
that running, jumping and kicking a ball are tests of national virtue
